Muse Music to Host Battle Royale
November 16, 2006
Five years ago the combat began. Local bands gathered in a grungy brick building for an event of musical warfare, fighting for the title of Muse Music's Battle of the Bands Champion.

On Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, local music hall Muse Music, 151 N. University Ave., will once again erupt in musical hostility during its 10th biannual Battle of the Bands finals.

"People should come first because the music is great," Muse Music owner Jake Haws said. "We picked 16 of the best bands in Provo."

But Haws is quick to explain that the event is about more than making a buck; he said he believes it provides an important service to the bands and local music lovers.

"There're plenty of bands in Provo," Haws said, "and it's a shame when so many of them go unrecognized. This gives them a chance to be heard by new people and expand their audience. And it gives the audience an alternative to always going to the dollar movie or bowling."

The competition began Tuesday. Four different bands slug it out each night this week, each night's winner earning a spot in Saturday night's final competition. Tuesday's winner was Hello Newman, Wednesday's was Twin Swords and at press time, Thursday's winner had not been decided. Tonight, local bands Forgotten Charity, Joe Reni, A. Smith and the Hypercubes will compete for the last opening in the final competition.

When the smoke clears, one band will emerge victorious. The winner is awarded a cash prize and more importantly, time in the Muse Recording Studio to help further their music careers.

Audience members have the opportunity to win, too; Muse Music will conduct raffles for CDs, records, concert tickets and studio time. Tickets are $5 for one night, $8 for two.
